Tady je ukázka finálové eseje z druhosemestrálního kurzu angličtiny, ENGLISH 102. Z této eseje jsem dostal B. Forma i styl je v pořádku, jen stále pár gramatických chyb zůstává. Můj největší problém jsou členy „a“ a „the“. Dále je nutné dodržovat příslušný formát, v tomto případě MLA, který se používá zejména v obchodních a ekonomických oborech. Hlavně nikdy esej nekopírujte, hrozí za to až vyloučení. Také není dobrý nápad překládat jinou esej z češtiny. Nikdo na to nepřijde, ale forma není dobrá když jen překládáte slova, tak jako tak to musíte celé napsat znovu. Myslím, že dost z vás zjistí, že takovouto esej byste nejspíš také zvládli:

Kurt Vonnegut: Harrison Bergeron
In 1961, Kurt Vonnegut published a science fiction story where equality of one person to another overcomes freedom rights. Author refers it: “THE YEAR WAS 2081, and everybody was finally equal.” Equality is secured by law. “All this equality was due to the 211th, 212th, and 213th Amendments to the Constitution.“ Constitution of the United States has twenty seven amendments today, so all those amendments were added to protect equality over freedom rights. Vonnegut shows us how laws and restrictions are made to take away our freedom. To secure that nobody has an “unfair advantage“of higher intelligence or physical strength. For example, government placed radio handicap on citizens to ban them of using advantage of their brains. Furthermore, weights bag were used to down the physically advanced. Advantages above the set average were considered abnormal and illegal.
The married couple in the story is watching television. Hazel, the wife, example of average person; however, she can think only in short bursts because the average is low. Her husband, George, was more intelligent that the average, so he was required to wear radio handicap transmitter which keeps distracting him from building his thoughts. The couple was watching television, but they can not comprehend what are they really watching and why. People are kept in a life style without any deeper thoughts or desires. Equality is strictly watched by general handicappers who can put anybody in prison if he or she tried to take off their handicaps.
The equality refers to the communism. Communists desired that the working class rules, however, they were not educated to rule a system of government in which were not educated for. The intelligence was persecuted during Communism. In the story, intelligence does not have a chance to break through because of government restrictions. George claims how bad would be to take off the weight bag just for a moment: “Two years in prison and two thousand dollars fine for every ball I took out,” said George. “I don’t call that a bargain.”
Even though George has to wear many handicaps, he seems to like the system. He does not care that his potential is limited. He refers to the time without handicaps: “we’d be right back to the dark ages again, with everybody competing against everybody else.” Capitalism was the time of competition which symbolize the dark ages. George nor Hazel wants to travel back to this time.
Harrison Bergeron is the son of the couple. He is fourteen years old, seven feet tall, and extremely intelligent. Therefore, he represents real danger for the society. He escapes from the jail where he was held because of his abnormality. He breaks into a television show and claims to be a new emperor: ““I am the Emperor!” cried Harrison. “Do you hear? I am the Emperor! Everybody must do what I say at once!” He stamped his foot and the studio shook.” Harrison is the symbol of another extreme system of ruling which results to feudalism where the strongest one is suppose to rule. Harrison rips of all of his handicaps to demonstrate his power. He also seeks support from the people, promising them titles of dukes and earls in his new empire. Harrison request draws the most beautiful and talented ballerina from TV show to join Harrison. They start their unbelievable dance, demonstrating even unreal potential. “They leaped like deer on the moon.”
In spite of Harrisons power and intelligence, he underestimates his opponent, handicapper general Diana Moor Glampers.
It was then that Diana Moon Glampers, the Handicapper General, came into the studio with a double-barreled ten-gauge shotgun. She fired twice, and the Emperor and the Empress were dead before they hit the floor. Diana Moon Glampers loaded the gun again. She aimed it at the musicians and told them they had ten seconds to get their handicaps back on.
Revolution is over. She comes out of nowhere. She shoots down Harrison without any warning and with easiness like antic god Athena hunts the deer in many paintings.
Diana Moon Glampers represents the ruling class. Author does not say whether she is the real ruler or there is someone on the top. This present the reader with an interesting question - Does she or any other ruler wear any handicaps? It is hard to say, but it would be difficult to rule society with a blasting thing in your ear. All the handicaps could be used just for easier control of the people.
On the other hand, Harrison is shot by shotgun in the year 2081. One would expect society to invent more sophisticated guns by that time. Shotgun can be sense of a lack of improvement and an attempt of keeping society on a lower level.
Intelligence is blocked, so improvement in many way stops. Rulers locked people’s minds, so they just live their lives in ignorance. It seems to work perfectly. Parents watch their son murdered on television, and they do not care because of their government devices that control them.
This story also shows the influence of television. People U.S spend lot of time entertaining themselves with media. Harrison goes to the television studio to spread his idea about how emperor should rule society. He uses the media to spread his ideas through the nation.
Story is quite easy to read and understand. It is tragic, sarcastic, and funny. Some of the critics claim it as a dystopia and the others as a pure science fiction. In my opinion, it is little bit of both. The story has a really strange atmosphere. You can feel it from dialogs of Harrison’s parents. The story is an extreme look at equality in society. It was an inspiration for few television adaptations and also for a song. I had a great time reading the story, and I would strongly recommend reading it.
